How to Wash Large Plush Toys in a Machine

Before You Start: Is It Actually Machine-Washable?

Large plush toys are usually tougher than they look, but not all of them belong in a drum. Press the body between your fingers. If you feel a hard box, a battery pack, a speaker or a rustle of crinkly plastic, stop and spot-clean instead. Some sound-making toys have a removable module hidden behind a flap at the back; if you can take it out safely, the outer toy may still be washable, but never risk it if you are unsure.

Next, check the seams. Run your thumb along the arms, ears and base, looking for loose stitching or a small hole. A wash cycle will widen any weak point, and you will lose filling down the drain. Five minutes with a needle beforehand saves an hour of re-stuffing later.

Finally, shake the toy outdoors and vacuum it lightly with a brush attachment. This lifts loose dust, pet hair and crumbs so the wash water stays cleaner and the fur revives more readily.

Prep the Toy for the Drum

For a large plush, a single pillowcase is often too small. Use a clean duvet cover, or a pillowcase doubled up, and secure the opening with an elastic band or a tight knot. This stops the toy snagging on the drum, protects fragile eyes and embroidery, and cushions the fur against friction. For medium toys, a zipped laundry bag works just as well.

• Detergent: mild, non-biological, liquid.
• Protection: duvet cover, pillowcase or zipped laundry bag.
• Extras: two old towels for blotting, plus a soft brush for later.

Use roughly a third of your normal detergent dose. Skip fabric softener altogether: it coats the fibres, dulls the colour and leaves fur feeling claggy. Never use bleach or harsh stain removers.

For visible marks — a gravy splat on a paw, a grubby ear — dab diluted detergent on with a cloth before washing. Treat gently rather than scrubbing, which mats the pile.

Choosing the Right Cycle

Set the machine to its most delicate programme, usually labelled 'hand wash', 'delicate' or 'wool'. Keep the temperature at 30°C or cooler; heat is the enemy of synthetic fur, can shrink fibres and may set stains. Choose a low spin, around 400–600 rpm, and add an extra rinse if your machine allows. Residual soap makes fur sticky and attracts dust.

Balance matters. One large toy in an otherwise empty drum will thump about and strain the machine, so add a couple of towels to even things out. Wash one large toy at a time — two together squash each other and leave less room for water to circulate.

Don't leave the damp toy sitting in the drum when the cycle ends. Mildew can begin within hours, and that musty smell is stubborn.

Drying Is Where Most Toys Are Ruined

This is the slow, unglamorous part. Never tumble-dry on heat: filling clumps, the glue behind eyes softens and outer fabric can shrink. If you must use a dryer, choose a no-heat air-fluff setting for ten minutes only, treating it as a head start rather than a solution.

Instead, squeeze the water out gently — never wring or twist. Lay the toy on a thick towel, roll it up and press down firmly with your palms. Repeat with a fresh towel. Reshape the toy, then dry it in a well-ventilated room away from radiators, direct sunlight and damp walls. Prop it on a drying rack or over a clothes airer so air reaches underneath, and turn it every few hours.

Large toys can take 24 to 48 hours to dry completely, longer in winter. Be patient. Press the deepest part of the body and the base of the stuffing; if it feels even faintly cool or damp, keep drying. Trapped moisture causes mildew, and that is a smell you cannot easily undo.

Bringing the Fur Back to Life

Once bone dry, the fur will probably look flattened and slightly sad. This is normal. Use a soft-bristled brush, a slicker brush or a clean comb, working in small sections and following the direction of the pile. Loosen any clumps with your fingers first.

For stubborn mats, a tiny spritz of water with a drop of conditioner helps, but use it sparingly and dry thoroughly afterwards. If the stuffing has shifted, massage it back into shape from the outside in. Finish by fluffing the toy in your hands and giving it a gentle shake.

Keeping Things Cosy Between Washes

Regular attention means fewer deep cleans. Spot-clean small marks as they happen, vacuum lightly once a month, and keep toys out of damp rooms and off cold floors where condensation gathers. Rotate favourites so no single toy is squashed into a bed corner for months on end, and store out-of-season ones in a breathable cotton bag rather than a sealed plastic bin, which traps moisture.

Washed, dried and brushed properly, a large plush toy comes back softer than ever — ready once more for sofa forts, bedtime and all the cosy business of being loved.
