Weighted friends, familiar textures and calming colours can offer reassurance during bedtime, travel or changes in routine. Let the child choose.
Anxiety in children often shows up physically: a churning tummy, tense shoulders, a need to hold something. A soft toy gives that feeling somewhere to go. It is warm, it is huggable, and crucially it is portable — it can go to nursery, to a hospital appointment, or to a grandparent's house for the weekend. Unlike a parent, it never has to leave the room.
What matters is not how expensive the toy is, but how well it fits the child. A toy that is too big to carry, too scratchy against the cheek, or simply not the one they wanted will sit on the shelf. The right one becomes a genuine coping tool.
Weighted soft toys work on a similar principle to weighted blankets, but on a much smaller scale. The gentle pressure can feel grounding, particularly for children who seek deep pressure or who struggle to settle at bedtime.
Weighted toys should always be hand-washable or have a removable, washable cover. A comfort object that cannot be cleaned is a comfort object that gets quietly hidden away.
Children in a anxious state are often sensory-seeking. A toy that offers the right feel can do more than a toy that simply looks appealing.
Sew a name label inside, and note the washing instructions. If the toy has plastic eyes or beads, check the age rating — anything with small parts is unsuitable for children under three who still mouth objects.
This is the single most important piece of advice. A comfort toy only works if the child has decided it is theirs. That means letting them hold several options, squeeze them, and pick the one that feels right — even if it is a startling shade of orange or a creature you find slightly odd.
If they are too young or too anxious to choose in a shop, try a slower approach:
Resist the urge to upgrade or replace a chosen toy with something "nicer". Familiarity is the whole point.
Anxiety often peaks at transitions. A soft toy can be built into the routine so it becomes a signal that the next thing is safe.
A toy that goes everywhere will get grubby. Plan for it. Buy a second one early if you can, and rotate them so both get worn in equally and neither looks suspiciously new. Wash on a gentle cycle inside a pillowcase, and dry naturally — tumble dryers can mat the pile and loosen stitching.
Keep a small repair kit: a needle, matching thread and a spare button. Re-stitching a seam takes ten minutes and saves a great deal of distress. If a toy is genuinely irreplaceable, take a photo of it and note the brand and size, so you have a fighting chance of finding another.
Above all, trust the child's instinct. The toy that comforts them may not be the one you would have chosen, but it will be the one that works.
