Creating a Cosy Reading Nook with Soft Furnishings

Start with the Corner, Not the Sofa

A reading nook is less about furniture and more about enclosure. The best spots are usually the ones nobody else wants: the shallow corner beside a chimney breast, the alcove under a window, the bit of landing too narrow for a desk. You want somewhere you can sit with your shoulders to two walls if possible, so the space feels held rather than open. Around 1.5 metres square is plenty for a chair, a small table and a lamp.

Check three practical things before you commit. Draughts first: a gap under a door or an old sash window will defeat the thickest blanket, so fit an excluder before you spend money on wool. Heat second: sitting directly against a radiator is unpleasant, so keep half a metre of clearance. Light third: you need daylight by day and a socket within reach for the evening. An extension lead tucked behind the chair is a small fix with a big payoff.

Choose a Seat That Holds You

Armchairs beat sofas for reading because the arms give your elbows somewhere to rest, which stops your shoulders creeping up towards your ears. Look for a seat height that lets both feet reach the floor — around 45 centimetres suits most adults — and a back that supports your shoulder blades. Deep, squishy sofas feel wonderful for ten minutes and punishing for an hour.

If you are working with a window seat or bench, add a foam cushion at least seven centimetres thick, cut slightly wider than the base so it does not slide. A small footstool, even a low one, takes pressure off the lower back.

Build the Layers in the Right Order

Calling them soft furnishings makes them sound decorative, but in a nook they are doing structural work. Layer from the outside in: something warm behind you, something soft beneath you, something within arm's reach for your lap. Mixed textures matter more than matching colours — a chunky wool throw over a smooth cotton seat reads as comfortable; too much coordination reads as a showroom.

• One large cushion, 50 to 55 centimetres, behind your lower back for support.
• Two medium cushions, around 45 centimetres, one for each elbow or one for your lap.
• A throw in lambswool or brushed cotton, roughly 130 by 170 centimetres, long enough to cover your legs and tuck under your feet.
• A smaller textured cushion in velvet, bouclé or needlecord for contrast and something to hold.

Keep the palette to three tones or fewer — oatmeal, moss and rust, for instance — and let the textures do the talking. If cushions slide, a strip of non-slip matting underneath costs very little and fixes it permanently.

Light It Warmly and Low

Overhead lighting flattens a room and makes a corner feel like a waiting area. One table lamp with a warm white bulb, around 2700K, is the whole trick. Position the shade so its bottom edge sits roughly level with your shoulder when seated, throwing light onto the page without shining into your eyes.

Choose a dimmable bulb if you can, and a switch you can reach without standing up. A second, much lower light source helps too: a small lamp on a low shelf or a short string of warm fairy lights along the skirting. Keep it out of your direct eyeline. The aim is enough light to read by, with no hard edges to the room.

Find Room for Plush Toys and Collections

Soft toys, plush companions and small collectibles belong in a reading nook. They soften hard corners, add personality and give your hands something to do while you think. The trick is display rather than pile. A single shelf at seated eye level, or a low woven basket beside the chair, keeps a rotating selection looking deliberate.

• Rotate seasonally. A few favourites out at a time, the rest stored clean and dry, keeps the shelf interesting and the dust manageable.
• Protect the vulnerable. Direct sun fades dyed plush and printed boxes within a season, so keep displays away from strong window light.
• Brush and air rather than wash. A soft brush and a few hours in a dry, airy spot handle most dust; check care labels before anything wetter.
• Mix sizes. One larger piece anchoring the end of a shelf, with smaller ones grouped in threes, reads better than a neat row.

A plush toy on your lap is also a perfectly legitimate cushion. Nobody is judging.

Keep the Corner Working All Year

A nook stops being inviting the moment it becomes a dumping ground for laundry and unopened post. Give it a small, defined storage habit: one basket for throws, one for current reads, nothing else. Swap heavy wool for cotton and linen in summer, then back again in October, and move the lamp as the evenings lengthen. A corner that shifts slightly with the seasons stays used, which is the entire point.
